Chariot Race

Last weekend Preston Scouts took part in an exciting few days of chariot racing which saw teams compete against each other at Bispham Hall Scout Estate in Billinge.  The race was open to teams of Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout network and even Scout leaders, with a total of over 50 teams taking part this year.

craceTwo teams from Preston entered the race representing 3 troops, 7th Fulwood, 4th Fulwood and 46th Preston. Over the weekend the teams camped at Bispham Hall, a fantastic sixty-acre activity centre and great campsite facility for scouts. On Saturday 8 October, teams competed in chariot races to try and secure places in the finals on Sunday.

The chariot races take place around the campsite in which teams push two wheels and a frame, ridden by a jockey, as fast as they can. The course takes them through muddy fields and over several tricky obstacles, including the climbing net, clambering logs and the Mill Pond. This year both of our scout’s teams qualified for the Sunday finals. After a full weekend of competing, Preston Scouts finished the race very wet and muddy, with one team breaking their Saturday record time by almost a minute.

Next year’s chariot race will be the 40th race and more Preston teams are planning to build chariots and take part in the fantastic event.
