Further Information

What is a Scout Group?

Scouting at the local level operates within Scout Groups. Each group can have any of the age sections (and most Groups run most of the sections)...So each group is split into Beaver,Cub, and Scout sections, (the District also runs seven Explorer Units) each with their own leaders and assistants (and of course each with their own 'type' of Scouts).

Each group has its own 'name'. This is normally just a number although large groups with more than one Colony/Pack/Troop/Unit or a Group with an interesting history or background may be known by a name such as 46th Preston.

The Group Scout Leader (GSL) has the ultimate responsibility for the group while the Section Leaders (e.g. CSL - Cub Scout Leader) are in charge of running each section.

In addition to the sections there are the important 'behind the scenes' people such as the Committee, the Treasurer and Chairman and all the parents and helpers that help to make the Group run smoothly.

Each Group has its own traditional 'catchment' area and of course most of the Group's members will live nearby. However there is no discrimination to entry of a particular Group except where it becomes impractical or unsafe. You are free to join whatever Group you so wish.

The Group runs 'itself' and is responsible for providing the means for the Scouts to follow the aims, method and programme of Scouting. Each section in the Group meets regularly at Beaver Leader Meetings, Cub Leader Meetings and so forth. The District Team keep an eye on the Groups and provide a wide range of support.
